Ghostwritten (2ND) [Paperback]

by Mitchell, David

David Mitchell's intriguing debut novel includes nine interlocking chapters that trace a chain of events that affect lives across several continents. Ghostwritten begins and ends in the mind of a member of a doomsday cult who commits mass murder by releasing poison gas into the Tokyo subway system. An errant phone call links him to the manager of a music store who develops a crush on a girl and follows her to Hong Kong. The story then tells of a British businessman living in Hong Kong who spies the lovers in a fast-food outlet.

Each of the six subsequent stories continues in a similar fashion, the characters from different locations connected sometimes by a fleeting thought, sometimes by more fateful encounters. The ingenious ways in which Mitchell links the narratives provide a lot of the book's pleasures and half the fun of Ghostwritten is trying to spot references from all the other stories. One of the many reviewers who are charmed by the book is author A.S Byatt, who proclaims Ghostwritten to be "the best first novel I have ever read".
